We want every child’s visit to end on a positive note, and that includes feeling comfortable once they are back at home. Below are helpful reminders to support your child’s recovery after their dental appointment. If you ever have questions or concerns, we are just a phone call away.
After Preventive Treatments
Dental Cleaning (Prophy)
It is normal for your child’s gums to feel a little sore for a day or two. Rinsing with warm salt water a few times a day can help. If needed, Children’s Tylenol, Advil, or Motrin can be used based on your child’s age and weight.

Fluoride Application
To give the fluoride time to strengthen the teeth, please wait at least 30 minutes before your child eats, drinks, or rinses.

Sealants
Sealants may feel a little “bumpy” or different at first. That sensation should fade within a couple of days. Avoid sticky or crunchy foods for the first 24 hours so the sealants can set properly. It is normal for small pieces of the sealant to wear away on the edges. Your dentist will check them at your checkup appointments.

After Restorative Treatments
Local Anesthesia
Keep a close eye on your child for the first couple of hours after their visit. Since they may not feel parts of their mouth, it’s best to stick with soft or liquid foods until the numbness wears off. Try to remind them not to bite, chew, or play with the numb area, as it could lead to an accidental injury. There may be discomfort associated with the injection site, over the counter pain medication can be used to manage this.
Fillings or Crowns
Once the numbness wears off, your child can eat soft foods, but try to avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for the rest of the day. It’s normal for the area to feel a little sensitive afterward. If they are uncomfortable, you can give them Children’s Tylenol, Advil, or Motrin based on their age and weight. The tooth will feel different to the child as there is a new material on the tooth, this feeling should subside within a couple days.

Tooth Extractions
To protect the healing site:
- Encourage your child not to touch the area with their tongue or fingers.
- If mild bleeding continues, place moist gauze over the spot and apply gentle pressure for 30 minutes. Repeat if needed.
Stick to soft foods for a day or two, and limit physical activity the rest of the day. If pain or bleeding lasts beyond 24 hours or worsens, contact our office so we can help.
