What Is Emergency Dentistry?
A dental emergency is an urgent situation affecting the teeth or mouth that needs immediate attention by a dentist. Severe pain, a knocked out tooth, or any other dental injury or problem should be addressed as soon as possible. Don’t wait. Call us right away in a dental emergency. Prompt treatment can make all the difference when it comes to saving your child’s tooth.
How To Handle Dental Emergencies
Here are some of the most common dental emergencies and how to handle them:
- Avulsion (Knocked out tooth). If a permanent tooth gets knocked completely out of the socket, handle it by the crown of the tooth only and avoid touching the roots. Rinse it off carefully (plug the drain first) and place it back in the socket. Have your child bite down on some clean gauze and call us. If you can’t get it back in place, put it in some milk and bring it with you to our office. Do not put a baby tooth back in the socket. Save the tooth in milk and call us.
- Fractured (Broken) tooth. For a chipped or broken tooth, save the pieces in milk if you have them and call us. We may be able to reattach the broken pieces. If not, the tooth may be saved with dental bonding or a crown.
- Dislodged tooth. For a tooth that is knocked loose or out of place, call us. It will most likely need to be splinted for support until the tissues can heal and tighten back down around it.
- Toothache. For a severe toothache, call us at any time. The tooth may be infected and in need of nerve or other treatment. For a minor toothache, call us during regular office hours and we will assess the tooth and provide treatment.
- Soft tissue injury. A soft tissue injury to the mouth may need immediate treatment. If bleeding is under control, call us and we will see you as soon as possible. If there is uncontrolled bleeding, call 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency department.
